DECEMBER 2007

PREMIER DIVISION

SATURDAY DECEMBER 29

Exeter Civil Service hopes of headng into the New year top of the Premier division table were blown away by visiting Thorverton and two sensational strikes. Civil kicked off at Foxhayes three points clear of rivals Wellington, and everything looked good when they took the lead through Ryan Pym, but Thorverton were having none of that. The mid Devon side levelled via Lee Riggs and the same player then hit a cracking goal minutes into the second half to give his side the lead. Adam Langabeer topped it with yet another stunning top corner job from the best part of 30 yards, and Thorverton were then well in control. Despite having to put on three subs at half-time including a replacement goalkeeper, Civil played some good football and got back in the game with a well hit Neil Fairchild strike. However Riggs then completed his hat-trick with a superb volley and Thorverton had a big scalp and move up to third place once again. Thors manager Ian Harris could not have been more delighted, and said his team did him proud. Civil's Mark Willey said Thorverton deserved the victory but he could not fault his team for the quality of play especially in the second half.

Wellington Town take over as leaders after their emphatic 4-0 win at Heavitree Harriers and that is the first time the Somerset club have ever toppled their Exmouth rivals. Wellington manager John Norman had the first two goals as Wellington took total charge, and from another Norman effort that rebounded off the post, Cameron Nott then netted the third. Craig Aspin completed the Wellington scoring, and the Harriers were left totally deflated. Beaten manager Jody Bolt said his team had a good spell in the second half as they tried to fight back, but Wellington would not crack.

Topsham Town beat Clyst Valley 2-0 with another useful performance and the win lifts the Coronation Fields side into the top half of the table for the first time. Both goals came from Ian Curran who now has eleven goals to his credit, his six in the league coming in the last two months, but it is far from a one man show. Topsham secretary Mike Webb feels the team are overall playing well, but defeat was a hammer blow for Clyst and manager Jeff Weeks who will not have enjoyed a second festive loss.

After their single goal victory at Heavitree Social Club last week, Feniton went one better winning 2-0 on their own patch. The East Devon side again left it late scoring twice in the last ten minutes despite having key midfielder Dave Court sent off seconds earlier for a bad tackle. Breakaway goals from Jonathan French and Andrew Jones then stunned Heavitree who in turn then had Stacey Thorpe red carded as well. Heavitree were also denied a late consolation by a remarkable save from Fenny keeper Trevor Anning.

Beer Albion won 3-1 at home to Pinhoe after coming from a goal down. The pins took the lead through Steve Blatchford and at the time looked much the better side, but they made a real mess of a back pass which bobbled into the net for an own goal and then the temperature went up when Beer's Danny Rowson and the pins Jason Ronchetti were both sent off for a flare up. The game could have then swung either way but the fishermen grabbed the incentive with a Martin Adkin header and doubled their advantage through James Melville to win what they feel is a huge result.

The other Premier matches between Bickleigh v Hatherleigh Town and Sidmouth v Cullompton Rangers were postponed because the respective grounds were unplayable. Also 23 Senior and Intermediate matches were also rained off throughout the League due to waterlogged surfaces.

TEAM OF THE DAY - THORVERTON

SATURDAY DECEMBER 22

Exeter Civil Service 2-0 win at Pinhoe ensured they go into Christmas as Premier division leaders. The Foxhayes club scored twice before half-time through Ryan Pym and Dave Wilkes, who also hit the post, but overall Civil were lucky to survive a barrage of chances from the pins. Home manager John Moore said he could have not have asked for a better response from his players but somehow they could not turn all their good work into goals. Civil boss John Gribble and Mark Willey both agreed with that, but were also delighted to picked up the points which keep ahead of their rivals.

Second place Wellington Town came from a goal down to beat Clyst Valley 2-1 and rated it one of their hardest matches so far. The Valley went in front with an excellent goal from Ollie Bird after fine work by James Ibbesson, but the Somerset team equalised with a penalty, after having an earlier claim turned down. Craig Aspin was the scorer, and Wellington who also hit the crossbar four times then snatched the winner from Tim Legg.

Thorverton moved into joint third place with a 3-1 win against Topsham Town and they really had to knuckle down to beat a less than full strength Exeter side. Ben Bristowe was the matchwinner for the thors with a superb second goal after also getting the only goal of the first half. Gavin Ward equalised for Topsham after the break but once Briatowe struck, Luke Wyatt then added a third for the thors whose manager Ian Harris was very pleased with the performance.

Darren Bingham struck a hat-trick to guide St Martins to a 4-1 win against Bickleigh and maintain their challenge in the title race. Steve Bassett also scored for the Minster Park team who were three goals ahead before Bickleigh managed to get some input. Jordan Copp then scored for the mid Devon side but he also missed a penalty, and beaten manager Nigel Raybould said his team never got the ball down and played.

Feniton won what for them was a huge game at Heavitree Social Utd who are now managed by Paul Gill after former boss Tom Bulley stood down. The only goal in the 1-0 victory came around the 80th minute through Andy Jones, and Feniton thought they deserved the win in a very sporting game enjoyed by both teams.

Sidmouth Town are off the basement rung after a 2-0 win against Cullompton Rangers who take their place. It was a second success in a row for vikings boss Paul Ashford who admits he did not realise how much hard work goes into running a side, but is pleased to finally get some reward. Mark Badcock scored the vikings opener and Chris Duchenski had the second but Sidmouth keeper Luke Ashford and Rangers Dave Rowe both made some excellent stops.

Hatherleigh Town avoided last place after their 2-1 win against Beer Albion with Matt Wonnacott and Ben Kimber getting the two goals for the North Devon side, but they had to batten down the hatches in the closing thirty minutes. James Melville replied for the fishermen but their manager Matt Rooke was not happy that a number of his team failed to travel for their longest trip of the season, and reckons that cost them.

TEAM OF THE DAY - WELLINGTON TOWN

SATURDAY DECEMBER 15

A stunned Exeter Civil Service had their hopes of a six point cushion at the top of the Premier division shattered by a 2-0 defeat at home to struggling Hatherleigh Town. No matter what Civil threw at the North Devon team especially in the first half, visiting keeper Dave Penberthy had an answer. Warning of what was about to happen came in the tenth minute when Dean Rice gave Hatherleigh the lead, and in the second half Rice collected his second goal, doubling his league account for the season, and the visitors at Foxhayes had a firm grip. In the end Civil were restricted to a few long range shots, and the hard working North Devon side fully merited the days major upset.

It has been a while coming but bottom of the table Sidmouth Town finally presented new manager Paul Ashford with his first win. The success came at Bickleigh 3-1 but was a sickener for home manager Nigel Raybould who was appalled by how badly his side played. Ben Cole, with his first of the season, opened Sidmouth's account, and although Bickleigh managed to get back on terms, Mike Stamp and Andy Thompson netted the two decisive goals which gave the vikings a fully deserved three points. Manager Ashford was delighted, but his team remain bottom because of what was going on eslewhere.

Title hopefuls St Martins were sent home with their tails between their legs from Beer Albion where they were beaten 3-1. At half-time with the scoreline blank it was anyone's match and if anything Saints had been the better side, and had a goal disallowed, but what a change in the second half. James Melville with a superb goal gave Beer the lead, and with their confidence boosted the fishermen made their pressure count with a double strike from Mark Anning. St Martins netted a late reply with a Ross Parker header from a corner kick, but they paid heavily for not defending well.

Topsham Town destroyed Pinhoe 6-1 in yet another mind boggling result, and for the tops it was a victory that is close to their best this season. Adie Carpenter with a penalty and Stuart Tyrer had Topsham leading 2-1 at the break, and Pinhoe were still in the game. However in the closing twenty minutes Topsham found another gear and the goals rained in from Julian Dunstan 2, Ian Curran and an own goal. Pins manager John Moore said he was embarrassed by the way his side fell apart, from a first half when they hit the bar several times. Vinnie Conabeare scored the Pinhoe goal, but the late collapse left Moore flattened.

Heavitree Harriers were just twenty minutes away from losing at Feniton, but managed to get back on terms at 2-2 and in the last five minutes scored twice to win 4-2. Goals from Dave Court and John French had Feniton ahead and playing well enough to hold out, but their luck caved in when Bobby Dawson, who has only one goal to his credit this season, netted his second goal of the game in off a defender. Matt Dawson and Tim Cordrellier then scored twice in the last five minutes as the pressure mounted and Harriers were able to enjoy their second win in three weeks at Acland Park.

TEAM OF THE DAY - HATHERLEIGH TOWN

SATURDAY DECEMBER 8

All Premier matches postponed

SATURDAY DECEMBER 1

An elated Exeter University sprang a major upset when they beat joint Premier leaders Wellington Town 1-0 on their own patch. The deciding goal came just twenty minutes from time from Tom Arnold, his first goal in Premier this season, and was only the second away win for the college this term. Defeat also put an end to Wellingtons 100% home record, and for manager John Norman was a bitter disappointment, but he had no complaints about losing to a college side which looked very strong in every department.

Exeter Civil Service sailed three points clear after beating Thorverton 4-2 but it was a cracking game and one that the home side felt they could have taken something from. In their eyes Civil top scorer Dave Wilkes was the difference, his hat-trick undoing all the thors hard work after they had taken the lead through John Nott, and been level 1-1 at the interval. Wilkes then scored twice and although Adrian Andrews closed the gap again in the second half for Thorverton with his second league goal this season, they were finally beaten by a Neil Fairchild free-kick. Civil's Mark Willey was delighted with the result.

Heavitree Social Utd went under 4-1 to Beer Albion despite getting an early lead through Wayne Knight with his second league goal. It was a very positive start for the Wingfield Park team but the fishermen then scored two goals in two minutes and after that were in complete control. Both goals came from Mark Anning and then Martyn Hancock and Matt Rowson netted one each to round off a good performance from the fishermen. Beer manager Matt Rooke was delighted by the result and reckoned his side could have doubled their tally by the close.

East Devon Senior Cup round 2

There was great drama in the second round East Devon Senior cup at Topsham Town where visiting Hatherleigh Town hit back three times to snatch a 5-3 victory. The win takes the North Devon side into the quarter finals but the Tops were left cursing their luck after being 3-2 up in extra time. Although struggling in the league, Hatherleigh managed to brighten their season with a late flourish of goals with Simon James, Sam Arthurs, Dean Rice with a penalty, Graham Bryant and Darren Moore all scoring one each. Ian Curran with his second successive double and Kevin Webb scored for the tops. Topsham player Stuart Tyrer had to be taken to hospital after colliding with the post.

There was no cup dream for first division Seaton Town after they were beaten 4-0 by Premier division St Martins. All four goals came in a top notch second half for the Minster Park club, after they were denied in the opening half by a resolute Seaton. Having assessed their hosts in the first half, Saints raced out of the blocks in the second half with two quick goals from Steve Bassett and Darren Bingham, with Ross Parker and Greg Hooper completing their haul as Seaton faded.

Heavitree Harriers were 2-0 winners at Feniton and for over an hour did not really have to stretch their wings. The Exmouth team gained control with first half goals from Liam McMahon and Matt Dawson and only in the last third of the tie did Feniton manage to compete.

Alphington are also through to the last eight after winning a penalty shoot out at Broadclyst Social Club 4-1. The tie had ended 3-3 after extra time, and then Broadclyst missed three of the four penalties they took while Alphington converted every one of their share. Tony Kyle Chris Wright and Dean Voaden were the scorers for a dejected Broadclyst.

The tie between Bickleigh and Pinhoe was postponed as Happy Meadow was under water.

Sidmouth Town enjoyed a bye into the quarter finals, while Budleigh Salterton and Clyst Valley are already through having won their ties back in October.

TEAM OF THE DAY - EXETER UNIVERSITY

Corey O'Donaghue netted twice and Ross Walker once as Newtown turned the match over.
Budleigh were held to a 1-1 draw by Willand Rovers and felt they paid the price for not taking advantage of the wind at their backs in the first half. Scott Thornhill scored for the robins, but Willand then dominated the second half and fully deserved their equaliser.

Sam Tibbitts with two goals, Tom McDonough and two own goals including one from Mel Pym helped Clyst to their win.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 22

Budleigh hit the post and had chances, but their manager John Pannell felt they just did not do enough.

Three goals in the opening 17 minutes ensured the robins had control, and although the Ammies kept plugging away they could not recover the early loss, David Evans and Simon Rose both scored twice and Aaron Poulton once for Budleigh. Defeat drops the Ammies into last place, but manager Rick Withers is far from down-hearted.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 8

After a start to the season which has since very little football cancelled, the winter weather swept in with a vengeance for the Devon & Exeter Football league at the weekend. Just five games survived out of a scheduled 68 match programme, and from Premier down to Senior 3 there were no games played at all. Division Senior 5 was also swept aside, leaving a single game in Senior 4 at Newtown's Grace Road pitch, and one match to be played in each of the four Intermediate divisions. Even Duckes meadow in Exeter where the University usually play, the rains came to wash away their plans.

As always there was a twist in the tale, the weathermen from the Met Office did not lose their game in their local derby in Intermediate division 3 against Priory. Both teams play at Hamlin Lane in Exeter but it was Priory who felt more at home as they stormed to a 5-0 win against their nearest neighbours. Scott Laskey grabbed a hat-trick and Ace High had the other two goals as the weathermen were blown away. When just a goal down Priory keeper Lee Hook made two brilliant stops and secretary Mike Phillips felt that was the time they really gained control. The other irony was that Priory reckoned their council ground was in better shape than last week, the saturday lunchtime break in the rain and a strong wind making the pitch very playable.

Neil White with both goals earned Newtown their 2-1 victory against Tedburn St Mary in Senior 4. The victory takes Newtown up to fourth place, their best position this season, althoug it was their 13th league game and the halfway mark for the Grace Road club who have played more matches than most of their rivals. Dave Spooner scored the Teds goal.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 1

East Devon Bill Slee Cup

Newtown goalkeeper Russell Geach was the star of the day after he saved all three showdown penalties from Honiton Town in a dramatic end to their second round Bill Slee cup second round tie at Grace Road. Newtown had earlier let a 4-1 lead ebb away to 4-4 after 90 minutes, and both teams scored again in extra time to finish at 5-5. In fading light Newtown managed to convert their three spotkicks, but Geach made three tremendous stops to take all the glory. Jack Gill with two goals, Ashley Landers, Jason Blatchford and Paul Jackson were the Newtown scorers in the main event. Sean Lapping, Richard Newby, Gareth Mitchell, Dave Woodman and Jack Knight were the Honiton scorers.
Morchard Bishop are also through to the last eight after beating Newton St Cyres 4-2 but it was closer than they had expected. Liam Scholfield and Chris Andrews both scored twice for Morchard.
Bow AAC won a brilliant tie at Clyst Valley 2-1 with the winning goal coming fairly late in the day. Freddie Vincent was the Valley scorer, and beaten manager Bill Porter said his team did him proud despite losing.
Four goals in the second half gave Heavitree Social Utd a 4-0 victory at Exeter Civil Service, but the real winner was the sporting attitude of both teams which for a derby clash was exemplary.
