PREMIER DIVISION REPORTS FOR MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2008
for SENIOR AND INTERMEDIATE REPORTS SCROLL DOWN |

SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23
Topsham Town defied the odds to come up with an eye-blinking 2-1 victory at Premier leaders Exeter Civil Service. Looking to end a run of four successive defeats, the tops put in a performance that could not be questioned, with the work ethic from every player non stop and which fully merited the victory. The warning signs for Civil came when Tim Rivetts gave Topsham a first half lead, but Civil did get back on terms with a volley from Mark Saunders. However the goal failed to lift their game and it came as no surprise when Luke Crowson, whose dad John Durham the former Sheffield Wednesday professional was watching from the touchlines, scored the winner. Topsham secretary Mike Webb said he was staggered at how hard the team worked, and what a big win. Civil's John Gribble rated it one of their worst displays, and with Wellington Town not in action, the chance to go seven points clear had gone.
The other eye catching result came at Bickleigh where Pinhoe managed to snatch an incredible 5-5 draw after leading for most of the way. The Pins were 2-1 and 4-2 ahead, but with just two minutes left in an incident packed game were 5-4 down. Mark Culley making his debut then came up with their fifth goal to bring the curtain down on what was a real thriller. Jordan Copp with two goals, Ben White, Matt Atkins and a Stuart Anderson penalty made up the Bickleiogh scoresheet. Darren Eshun with a brace, Mike Williams and Freddie Loveday who was outstanding were the earlier Pinhoe scorers. Both camps felt they could have won it, but agreed a draw was the right ending.
Thorverton reclaimed third place with a 4-0 win against a Cullompton Rangers side which only fielded ten players until half-time. The thors scored twice in either half but manager Ian Harris felt they toiled against a Rangers side which did its best despite the odds. Lee Riggs scored twice for Thorverton with Emyln Harris and Luke Wyatt getting a goal each.
Clyst Valley dipped to a 4-0 defeat at the University and were simply paced out of the game. The college skipper George Cowell said his team probably had the better breaks as Clyst were not four goals poorer, but they are currently firing on all cylinders especially Tom Arnold who added another two goals to his collection. Luke Davis with a superb strike and Andy Blondell completed the scoring.
Heavitree Social Utd won 2-1 at Heavitree Harriers in Exmouth and it was no game for the feint-hearted. The referee booked seven players in a game both camps described as passionate and competitive, and sparked by a brilliant first minute 30 yard opener from Andy Taylor giving Harriers the lead. Heavitree dug deep and equalised after half an hour from Callum Gribble, and the action remained frenetic until Wayne King lashed in the winner in the 65th minute. The Wingfield Park side then battened down the hatches to claim a much needed triumph, and at the same time putting paid to Harriers hopes of a top three slot.
St Martins beat Hatherleigh Town 2-0, their fifth win in their last six outings, but they had to work overtime to see off the North Devon team. Both goals came from Darren Bingham, and manager Mike Nosworthy reckoned the second goal was sheer quality. Yet Hatherleigh also impressed Nozzer, and he failed to understand why they are so far down the table.
Feniton beat Sidmouth Town 2-0 just six days after beating their East Devon rivals in a local cup tie. Dave Court had the opening goal for Feniton but they did not wrap matters up until Andy Jones scored late in the second half. Both clubs had a player sent off, and Sidmouth had their chancesto score but both keepers played well, Russell Witton for Fenny and the vikings Luke Ashford.
TEAM OF THE DAY - TOPSHAM TOWN
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 16
Exeter University powered to a startling 6-1 victory against Heavitree Social Utd to register the top result of the day in the Premier division. The opening 18 minutes saw the students rack up a three goal lead with Heavitree playing their first game in three weeks reeling. After settling down Heavitree had their best spell at the start of the second half and reduced the deficit through Stacey Thorpe, but they tired in the last twenty minutes and the college smashed in another three goals. Tom Arnold with a brace, Luke Davis, Mike Georgiou, Joe Woodward and George Cowell with a penalty completed the scoreline for the University.
Second from top Wellington Town ended a winless run of four matches when they beat Bickleigh 3-1, but it was not an easy success. After going two goal clear the Somerset side let Bickleigh back in the match and for a while it was touch and go. A third goal settled the issue, but Wellington never really looked assured. Jack Adams with two goals including a penalty and Tim Lake scored for Wellington who close to within two points of Civil Service. Matt Atkins was the Bickleigh scorer, but the mid Devon side were unhappy with the Wellington opener which they claim was a very dubious penalty.
Its five matches unbeaten for Clyst Valley who claimed third place from Thorverton after beating their rivals 2-0 in a really close game. The thors reckoned they made the errors from which Clyst scored both, and that was the difference between two well matched outfits. Matt Thompson and Ashley McDermid scored for the Valley both goals coming in the ten minutes run up to the break.
Beer Albion won 1-0 at Topsham Town and manager Matt Rooke reckons they played some decent football and were well worth the points. James Melville with his 10th league and cup goal was the Beer scorer in the second half. Topsham secretary Mike Webb said the home team who have now lost four in a row, never got going and were the lesser side on the day.
St Martins made it four wins from five outings after they won 2-0 at a toothless Feniton and a cutting edge was the difference between the two sides. Steve Bassett after just ten minutes and Matt Anderson ten minutes from time did the job for the Saints, who climb up into the top six. Saints top scorer Darren Bingham smashed a drop ball against the crossbar late in the game and was booked for ungentlemanly conduct by the referee who had an excellent match.
After suffering two defeats in a row Heavitree Harriers came from 2-1 down to win 4-2 against Pinhoe. Two Steve Blatchford goals including a 30 yard special had the pins seeking their third win in just eight days, but they reckoned without a Harriers revival. Chris Abraham had the opener for Harriers and further goals from Tim Wright, Paul Horne and substitute James Turner tipped the balance in their favour for a victory they badly needed.
Hatherleigh Town won the basement scrap at Sidmouth Town 4-2 and climb over their East Devon rivals whose five match unbeaten run was brought to a juddering halt. Simon James, new signing Scott Huxtable, Kieran Alford and an own goal did the trick for the North Devon side. Anthony Griffiths and Andy Thompson replied for Sidmouth, but manager Paul Ashford said he took much of the blame with his tactics but generally Sidmouth defended badly.
TEAM OF THE DAY - EXETER UNIVERSITY
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 9
Pinhoe manager John Moore has insisted his team are far better than their current position in the Premier division indicates, and that their stunning 3-2 victory at Wellington Town proved the point. Fourth from bottom Pinhoe virtually won the match twice, having given away a two goal lead, but their win was huge in relation to their season and for Wellington whose title hopes have been severely dented. Four defeats in their previous five outings did not augur well for Pinhoe who had agreed to switch the match to Somerset as Pinn Lane has still not recovered from the winter weather. A Steve Blatchford goal fired Pinhos ahead and they increased that through Tim Hamblyn. Second from top Wellington who have drawn their last three matches, but are unbeaten in their last five, hit back either side of half-time through Mark Fitzgerald and Tim Legg to draw level. At that point the tide seemed to have turned but Pinhoe playing some excellent soccer netted the winner with a brilliantly taken second Blatchford goal and Moore claims they totally outplayed their hosts and were worthy winners.
Exeter University sank Heavitree Harriers 5-0 for the other result of the day, and the college side ran their visitors off their feet. Tom Arnold was the star for the college with a superb hat-trick and the win was completed through Dave Wiltshire and George Cowell. It was one of the best University efforts this season and Harriers manager Jody Bolt agreed his team were overrun, and could not contain the students on their huge ground at Topsham Road. College skipper Cowell said his team were tops, but they need to do it week in week out.
Clyst Valley won 2-0 at St Martins where they were expected to struggle, based on recent form, but on the day were much the better side. Goals from Steve Millington and Adam Pike were no less than Valley deserved, and the victory keeps them in the hunt at the top. Saints manager Mike Nosworthy was left totally deflated, and admits his team were not at the party, but he also felt that many decisions went against his side. Defeat ended a three match winning run for the Saints, but Valley are now unbeaten in four and manager Jeff Weeks is hoping this run continues.
Thorverton also won 2-0 at Hatherleigh Town in a fiery match which saw a bundle of yellow cards bandied about. Even the opening goal from a free kick was controversial, an own goal resulting, but there was no complaint about the second from Emyln Harris which was his first goal since October. Hatherleigh manager Stuart Dymond thought his team played well but did not create much and that was their downfall.
A late penalty gave Bickleigh a 3-2 victory against an incensed Topsham Town, and both teams admit they were perplexed about the decision. Bickleigh manager Nigel Raybould who accepted the gift was equally puzzled, but the outcome was that Stuart Anderson converted the spotkick and Bickleigh had the points. Kieran Rapo and Sam Hunt had twice given Bickleigh the lead, before Stuart Tyler and Tops manager Danny Carpenter had twice equalised. A draw then looked odds on as time ran out until the penalty five minutes from the end changed the story.
Beer Albion beat Feniton 3-1 and that result took the fishermen ahead of their East Devon rivals on goal difference. It was closer than the end result indicates, but Beer earned the points for their first half display which built a two goal cushion. Luke Bartlett brought in from the second team scored his first Premier goal and Beer added a second from Martyn Hancock their top scorer. Feniton hit back from the tireless Richard Austin, and for a while looked capable of a recovery, before Matt Rowson put the result beyond doubt with the fishermens third.
Sidmouth Town destroyed Cullompton Rangers 6-0 in their basement battle and felt they could have had double figures against a very depleted Rangers outfit. First half goals from Ben Ashford and Billy Jaworski, their first for the vikings, set the scene and then Andrew Thompson, Jaworski, Chris Duchenski and 16 year old substitute Jordan Cooper who minutes earlier missed a penalty completed the scoring. Rangers manager Greg Radmore said it was a real struggle to get a side together and he had to lean on the third team heavily. Meanwhile he is appealing for local players to come to the club and help out in the current crisis.
TEAM OF THE DAY - PINHOE
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 2
New look Bickleigh stopped in form Feniton in their tracks in the Premier division's upset of the day. The mid Devon side, having lost their last four matches and given a shake up by manager Nigel Raybould, rocked a Feniton side which had won its last five. Beaten 3-1 at Bickleigh three months ago Feniton did enjoy the lead through Andy Jones, but Bickleigh responded with a Nathan Haskins header and went 3-1 ahead with two excellent goals from Kieran Rapo rated highly by Raybould. John French headed Feniton back into the game, but Bickleigh playing the more constructive football saw time out to collect a welcome three points. Raybould was delighted with the way his team played, and Feniton could have few complaints especially with a rather abject first half effort.
The top match between second place Wellington Town and leaders Exeter Civil Service ended 1-1, the visitors getting an late equaliser to salvage a vital point. The draw maintains the five point gap between the pair, but Wellington who have now drawn their last three, still have five matches in hand. Civil defended doggedly for much of the game but their resistance was broken when Wellington manager John Norman scored on the hour. The equaliser came from Nick Gidley in the 82nd minute and after that both teams were conscious not to lose. Devon & Exeter League secretary Chris Davey making his first trip to Wellington said he enjoyed the game and was impressed by the quality of football played.
Thorverton are up to third place again after they snatched a last minute 3-2 win against Pinhoe. The Pins had fought back from two down at the break to close in on a point, but Ben Bristowe with his second goal of the game won it for the thors with 20 seconds remaining. John Nott also scored for Thorverton. Steve Blatchford had both Pinhoe goals but manager John Moore was in bits as his side played brilliantly to get back on terms. Moore said his team did not deserve to lose and he was proud of the way they played. Thors boss Ian Harris said his team had their backs to the wall at times, but he would take the win.
St Martins were also in top form with a 2-0 win at Heavitree Harriers and even beaten manager Jody Bolt reckoned the Saints were the best team they have met. Both goals came from Kevin Pike, and Saints manager Mike Nosworthy thought his side played some top football and defended superbly when they had to. Harriers were missing top scorer Matt Dawson who has moved over to Exmouth Town, and they lacked a cutting edge especially with several other strikers unavailable on the day.
Clyst Valley were heading for a comfortable win against Hatherleigh Town but took their eye off the ball and had to settle for a 3-3 draw. Goals from Adam Pike, Steve Millington and Ashley Mcdermid had Clyst 3-1 in front, well into the second half, but the North Devon side hung in and grabbed what could be a big point for them. Simon James with two goals and Sam Woollacott were the Hatherleigh scorers. Valley manager Jeff Weeks said his team defended badly and could not deal with the Hatherleigh goals which were all from headers.
Beer Albion were 1-0 winners at the University and for manager Matt Rooke it was a big result. The only goal from James Melville came midway through the first half and the fishermen never felt they would relinquish their lead. The college played lots of good football but rarely threatened according to Rooke.

SENIOR DIVISION REPORTS FOR FEBRUARY 2008 |
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 23
Senior One A Craig Higham goal after just half an hour was enough to earn Senior 1 leaders Budleigh Salterton a priceless 1-0 victory against battling neighbours Otterton. The classic derby contest was settled by a Karl Everest free kick turned in by Higham, and although it was to be the deciding factor, robins manager Alex Freer reckoned that overall his side merited the win, but credited Otterton who never dropped their workrate. Second place Newtown were held to a 0-0 draw at Devon Senior cup finalists Willand Rovers, and this was another excellent game between two clubs both in the hunt to go up. Newtown were out of the blocks faster, but Willand eventually came good and the only ingredient missing was goals. East Budleigh had their hopes damaged by a shock 1-0 defeat at home to Elmore, but it was a victory the eagles really deserved. Although struggling in the relegation zone, Elmore defended brilliantly with deputy keeper Kieran Harvey outstanding. Then they were presented with a penalty, and Steve Rowlands stepped up to convert for three priceless points. Culm Utd won their mid Devon derby at Westexe Rovers 3-1 with all the goals coming in the second half. Ross Stickland, Paul Harris and Stuart Shaw were the Culm scorers, with Andy Lane on target for the rovers. Seaton Town beat the University 2-0 and rated this as one of their better efforts against a very good college side. Scorers were Marcus Furneaux-Harris and George Moore with a goal in each half. Broadclyst Social beat Alphington 3-0 but felt they could have had a few more goals and had what they felt was a blatant penalty denied. Steve Woodward, Colin Gray and Jimmy Frost were the scorers. The two cellar dwellers Exeter St Thomas and Exmouth Amateurs drew 1-1. Steve Brown with a free kick saved a point for St Thomas after the Ammies led at the break.
Senior Two Second from last St Loyes had Senior 2 leaders Bow AAC on the rack when they led 2-0 at the break, but the mid Devon team responded brilliantly in the second half to win 5-2. Mark Searle 2, Gavin Coles, Ryan Greenwood, and Andy Rogers were the Bow scorers. Second from top Halwill were held to a shock 1-1 draw by bottom of the table Sidmouth Town. Halwill manager Andy Winser gave his side the lead, but Jay Thorn stunned the hosts before half time with the equaliser and the vikings held out despite constant second half pressure. Upottery won the big derby match at Honiton Town 2-1 and are into the top three. It was always going to be close but Upottery drew first blood through Adrian Coombe. Sam Farmer tied the scores during Honitons best spell but a breakaway goal in the second half from Andy Isaac won it for Upottery. Newtown eased their relegation worries after a 3-2 win against Barnstaple Town. Jack Gill, Mark Taylor and Luke Jones shared the Newtown goals. Lympstone are edging back into danger after going down 3-1 to the University. Kyle Bassett was the Lympets scorer. Exeter Civil Service collected a useful point from a 1-1 draw at North Tawton. It was Civil's sixth share of the season.
Senior Three Sandford produced one of the biggest upsets of the day when they toppled Seniot 3 leaders Morchard Bishop 2-1. Goals from Dean Pigeon and Ben Spears did the trick for Sandford who felt they really earned it. Beacon Knights regained top spot after winning 4-2 at Lapford but it was hard work and they were behind at the break to a penalty. Paul Ruddock with a second half hat-trick and Chris Baker then turned it over for the Knights. Kentisbeare underlined their challenge with a 6-0 win at home to Pinhoe. Heavitree Social Utd won 2-1 at Winkleigh with Adam Cann getting the winner. Tipton St John got the better of Uplowman Athletic 2-0 but were never comfortable. Lee Strawbridge and Adam Connett scored. South Zeal won 4-1 at the Motel & Offwell with all five goals coming in the second half. James Abbot was the Rangers scorer but the East Devon side are edging ever closer to the drop. Colyton won their derby match against Seaton Town 2-1 which keeps them well in the race to go up. Andy Widger and Andrew Dare scored for Colyton.
Senior Four Senior 1 leaders Witheridge had to wait until the last seven minutes to break Woodbury 1-0. The only goal came from Kyle Hall and Withy manager Mark Vellacott said it was reward for their constant pressure but Woodbury never gave it up. Clyst Valley led Tedburn St Mary by a goal at the break and then went 3-1 down before recovering to win 4-3. A Toby Tagg hat-trick including a penalty and an own goal won it for Clyst who said referee Cook was outstanding. Axminster Town won 2-1 at Crescent who led for most of the game from a Jason Malpas goal, and then after conceding twice had a goal disallowed. Terry Emmett and Graham White netted for the tigers. Bampton won 3-1 against Dunkeswell Rovers to ease their relegation worries. Steve Bedwell, Mike Takle and Alan Rapo scored for the ponies. Dunks manager Rod Hill replied with his first goal of the season. Topsham Town and Newtown drew 1-1. Danny Pym was the tops scorer with Trent McMullen Thomas equalising for Newtown.
Senior Five The Phoenix Club closed to within a point of top spot after crushing the Lord's XI 5-1. It was a clinical effort by Phoenix whose goals came from Ashley Bailey 2, their best player Scott Dove, James Fanson and Dean Brown. Leaders Oakwood suffered a 2-1 reverse against Colaton Raleigh but the visiting side played well and were value for the points. Nick Gumm was the Oakwood scorer. Thorverton were rocked 3-1 at Ottery St Mary but it was a good match. Barry Wood and two goal Scott Halliday won it for the Otters. St Martins also won 3-1 at Sidbury whose Mike Pigeon scored their only goal, and another 3-1 victory was earned by Sampford Peverell at Legends with Tim Robinson scoring twice and Steve Hayfield coverting a penalty. Exmouth Amateurs doubled their victories for the season after their narrow 1-0 win against Kentisbeare.
SENIOR TEAM OF THE DAY - SANDFORD
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 16
Devon Senior Cup
The Devon & Exeter League will provide both finalists in the Devon Senior Cup later this season after both Broadclyst Social Club and Willand Rovers came through their respective semi finals. Broadclyst, playing the biggest game in their history, won 2-1 after extra time against Dartmouth Utd, and elated manager Paul Taylor reckoned they were more than worth their success. The South Devon League side did take the lead, but veteran strike Colin Gray equalised to take their semi final at Liverton into another half an hour. With their confidence high Broadclyst went on the attack and it paid off with the winner from Mark McAndrews. Taylor said his team had far more chances throughout and the players really earned their reward.
Willand who won the Senior cup 22 years ago, destroyed Horrabridge of the Plymouth League 4-1 and were always in charge. Willand led 3-1 at the break and added a fourth goal in a second half they controlled with few alarms. Sam Williams with two goals including a 40 yarder, Lee Woodman and Rob Buxton were the Willand scorers. No date has yet been set for the final but Willand and Broadclyst are hoping it could be staged at a local venue such as Cullompton.
Senior One Newtown took another huge stride towards their dream of premier football for the first time ever when they overcame Senior 1 promotion rivals Seaton Town 1-0. There was very little between the two sides at Colyford Road, but the vital goal from Corey O'Donaghue, after an error by the home defence earned Newtown their victory. Newtown manager Pete Gaywood said his team stuck to their 4_3_3 system to lock Seaton out and it paid off, with O'Donaghue sharp enough to be in the right place when needed. Leaders Budleigh Salterton had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Alphington where the home team really carried the game to their visitors. Dean Jordan scored the Alphas goal and manager John Gott was delighted with the way his side played. Simon Rose replied for the robins whose lead is down to three points, but they have a match in hand. East Budleigh's title hopes were hit again by a 1-0 defeat at the University. Tom Dobson was the University scorer, and Budleigh missed a penalty. Culm Utd won 4-1 at bottom of the table Exmouth Amateurs who are getting isolated and are some eleven points from the safety barrier. Two goal Stuart Shaw, Gary Cross and Glyn Jones were the Culm scorers. Westexe Rovers came from a goal down to beat Exeter St Thomas 3-1. Phil Tarr, Andy Lane and Neil Stuckey were the Rovers scorers.
Senior Two The Senior 2 leaders Bow AAC crashed to a second defeat in a row, 1-0 at Upottery, and suddenly the title race is wide open again with Upottery very much in the running. Mark Tucker netted the only goal in a really good contest, and Upottery boss Merv Sawyer could hardly contain his elation. Halwill are now joint leaders after their 2-0 win at Dawlish Town. Manager Andy Winser who is on a personal crusade to earn promotion, and Ross Slade were the scorers up the junction. Sidbury Utd were checked by a 3-3 draw at home to struggling Newtown, but the home side did rescue a 3-1 deficit to snatch a point. Jack Gill, Paul Jackson and Luke Jones shared the Newtown goals. Exeter Civil Service continued their fight to avoid relegation with a 5-2 win against Sidmouth Town. Frank Ndoli and Jason Bastin both scored twice, Brendon Vaughan once. Johnny Beer and Craig Badcock netted for the vikings. The University beat St Loyes 2-1 with Pete Steadman and Sam Taylor on target, and Sam Flynn played well in defence. Barnstaple Town beat Lympstone 5-1, Alfie Gomez 2, Nathan Bate, Elliot McDonald and Lee Francis scoring. The Lympets reply came from manager Nick James.
Senior Three Morchard Bishop have taken over the leadership in Senior 3 after winning 1-0 on the ground of their closest rivals Beacon Knights, but sadly one of the Morchard players Lewis Oxley suffered a broken leg. Liam Scholfield was the Morchard scorer. Third place Heavitree Social Utd won 7-3 at Pinhoe after being 3-2 down early in the second half, Elliot Wells 2 Dave Melhuish, Adam Cann, Lewis Cann, Ross Carstairs and Mark Carstairs were the scorers. The pins led through Dave Moyes, Tom Murch and Ben Hunt before wilting. Kentisbeare were glad to get through a difficult game with Winkleigh 1-0, man of the match Ashley Perrott was the goalscorer, but Winkleigh went close when they hit the bar. Sandford enjoyed a 4-1 derby victory over Lapford 4-1 with Ben Spears, Steve Morrish, an own goal and a Nigel Harris penalty doing the damage. Tipton St John won 6-0 against the Motel & Offwell with Steve Jess, an Adam Connett hat-trick, Lee Strawbridge, and Adrian Small scoring. Two late goals sank South Zeal at home to Colyton where they were beaten 3-1. Chris Platts scored twice for Colyton, Harley Cann was the home scorer. Uplowman and Seaton Town shared a 3-3 draw, Niall Davis, Marcus Wyatt and Gareth Richardson were the Seaton scorers.
Senior Four Witheridge have taken over top spot in Senior 4 after a crushing 5-0 win at home to Topsham Town. Alex Shepherd netted a hat-trick. Former leaders Axminster Town suffered a big shock, beaten 2-1 at home by bottom of the table Crediton Utd. Jamie Parsons with a 40 yarder and a solo Simon Rogers goal did the job for Kirton. Woodbury were within seconds of victory at Chard Town but conceded a late equaliser for a 1-1 draw. Alex Hughes scored for Woodbury and keeper Dave Allen saved two penalties. Clyst Valley won 4-0 at Bampton but reckoned the scoreline was a little flattering. Toby Tagg 2, Mark Harris and Robbie Miller were the scorers. Crescent climbed into the top half of the table after they won 4-1 against Westexe Rovers. Newton St Cyres came from a goal down to beat Tedburn St Mary 3-1. Jean-Paul Schaap, Adam Keeford and Chris McGill were the Newton marksmen. Dunkeswell Rovers were 5-2 winners at Newtown whose Neil White and Adam Boulter scored consolation goals. Dan Drummond and Dan Snell had braces for the Dunks.
Senior Five The Senior 5 leaders Oakwood took a big step towards their target of a final top two slot and promotion when they defeated rivals Lord's XI 3-0. Two goal Lee Mellon, 28 for the season, and Nick Gumm were the scorers. Draw specialists Dawlish Utd were at it again a 1-1 result against Sidbury Utd having led with a Phil Hardee goal. Sidbury equalised in the last two minutes. Ottery St Mary were frustrated at Legends despite a lot of huffing and puffing and had to settle for a 0-0 draw. Sampford Peverell took big delight winning their derby match against Kentisbeare 5-2 after being a goal down. Luke Hayfield scored four goals and made the fifth for Tim Robinson. Thorverton routed Exmouth Amateurs 9-0, while St Martins are into the top six after beating Colaton Raleigh 3-1.
SENIOR TEAM OF THE DAY - CREDITON RESERVES
SATURDAY FEBRUARY 9
Senior One There were mixed fortunes for the two Devon Senior cup hopefuls Broadclyst Social Club and Willand Rovers in their preparations for next saturdays huge county cup semi finals. Broadclyst who are due to play Dartmouth Utd at Liverton this saturday for a place in the final, won their warm up game against Elmore 4-2, and manager Paul Taylor thinks his team are just in the right frame of mind. Two Colin Gray goals set Broadclyst on the way, and although Elmore managed to get back to 2-1 the home side then stepped up a gear. Lee Williams and Jimmy Frost added further goals. Kharl Kirby and Matt Leach were the eagles marksmen. Willand who are playing their semi final against Horrabridge at Tedburn St Mary, stumbled to a shock 1-0 defeat at home to near neighbours Culm Utd. The only goal came from Paul Orchard, but given recent results it was an upset and a blow to Willand's promotion hopes. Rovers manager Brett Andrews was disappointed but hopes it may be a bad performance out of the way. Otterton completed the double against neighbours East Budleigh winning 4-3, having won 6-2 a week ago, and that was enough for losing manager John Pannell to stand down. It was the manner of defeat and other factors including a late disallowed equaliser which influenced Pannell's decision, and he is adamant he is finished with football altogether. Simon Tuley with a hat-trick did most of the damage for Otterton, while two goal Dave Cockayne and Spencer West were the Budleigh scorers. Second from top Newtown won 5-1 at home to Exmouth Amateurs but they still trail leaders Budleigh Salterton by five points. Corey O'Donaghue with a hat-trick, Ben Howard and Simon Piper with a quality finish saw off the basement team who in turn did work hard and never gave up. Alphington came from behind to beat the University 2-1. The Alphas trailed into the second half before Dean Jordan equalised with a penalty, and then fifteen minutes from time Mark Brown headed the winner. Seaton Town revived their promotion challenge with a 3-1 win at home to Exeter St Thomas. Jamie Poynton, Marcus Furneaux-Harris and Ben Ede shared the Seaton goals.
Senior Two Second from top Halwill blew away Senior 2 leaders Bow AAC's unbeaten record winning 3-1 and the West Devon side raced out of the blocks to achieve their prize. Two goal Andy Winser and Andy Wonnacott built a 3-0 interval lead, and although Bow reduced the deficit with a Gavin Coles penalty, they could not recover the lost ground. Bow still hold a three point cushion on their rivals and they have two matches in hand. Sidbury Utd are up to third place after crushing St Loyes 6-0. Goals from Matt Rasmussen, Pete Grover, Kieran Small, Russell Coombes, Dan Churchill, and Steve Popham did the business for a rampant Sidbury. A dejected Honiton Town lost 2-1 to the University which was a blow to their promotion bid, Shaun Lapping was the Honiton scorer. Upottery were checked by a 2-2 draw at North Tawton whose Steve Ward scored both goals including a superb second equaliser with a volley. Jake Phillips and Andy Lord scored for Upottery. Exeter Civil Service continued their recent good form winning 4-2 against Barnstaple Town and having let the North Devon side take the lead. Jason Bastin with a penalty, Jason Adam-Ryan, Danny Belsten and Martin Swannell then scored for Civil. Dawlish Town beat Newtown 3-2 with James Spence, Ben Smith and Joe Crooks on target. Jack Gill and Ashley Landers with a penalty replied for the Grace road side. Lympstone recovered from going two down at Sidmouth Town to win 3-2. James Beverly, Liam Ellis and Jamie Alford were the Lympet scorers, but bottom of the table Sidmouth felt they were worth at least a draw, Simon Hudson and Craig Badcock netted for the vikings.
Senior Three Senior 3 leaders Beacon Knights were held 2-2 by Winkleigh and it needed a couple of goals from central defender Adrian Cole from corner kicks to salvage a point. The Knights admit they did not play well and the feeling was they had on eye on next weeks big game against rivals Morchard Bishop. Morchard won 3-1 against Pinhoe but had to work hard for the points. Heavitree Social Utd beat South Zeal 3-0 but did not really get into top gear. Callum Roberts scored twice in the second half after Danny Melhuish netted the opener in the first. Kentisbeare were 2-1 winners at Lapford but also made hard work of things. All the goals came in the first half, Tom Beddows and Ashley Perrott for the visitors and Ed Quick for the home side. Uplowman Athletic also won 2-1 at the Motel & Offwell whose Karl Allen scored their only goal.
Senior Four Axminster Town soared into top spot in Senior 4 after their 3-2 win at Westexe Rovers. Adam Downes had all three goals for the tigers. Woodbury dropped to third after a 0-0 draw at Bampton who felt they ought to have won it on chances. The ponies said that despite the lack of goals it was a good game but they are the draw specialists in this division. Witheridge eased into second placer after winning 4-2 at Tedburn St Mary. Kyle Hall, Alex Shepherd, Steve Roach and Matthew Snell were the Withy marksmen, but sadly the Tedburn St Mary keeper suffered a broken leg. Clyst Valley felt they upped their game from the previous week but still had to settle for a 1-1 draw with bottom of the table Crediton Utd. Robbie Miller was the Valley scorer. Newton St Cyres also drew 1-1 against Chard Town but they left it late, Matthew Wreford equalising with an 80th minute penalty after the Cyres had conceded in the first five minutes. Cyres also missed a two yarder but thought a draw was the right result. Topsham Town drew 3-3 with Dunkeswell Rovers with Lewis Heaver scoring twice. Gary Simpson was the other scorer. Richard Berry, Darren Snell and Phil Patterson were the Dunks scorers.
Senior Five The Phoenix Club are now the only unbeaten side in the entire league, and the Senior 5 title favourites maintained that record with a 4-2 victory against Sidbury Utd. Dean Brown with two goals, Ashley Bailey and man of the match Ryan Smith were the Phoenix scorers. Mark Hadley and Carl Baldwin replied for Sidbury.
