November 2007

Premier

Senior and Intermediate (below)

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 24

St Martins had their Premier title ambitions severely dented after crashing 2-1 at Topsham Town in their local derby. A good crowd at Coronation fields witnessed a really good all round performance from the Tops which secretary Mike Webb described as brilliant. Two goals from Ian Curran, both in the first half established control for Topsham and although St Martins reduced the deficit in the second half with a Darren Bingham penalty, they did not really look like getting back on terms. The win is a massive boost for Topsham in their bid to climb away from danger, and the hard work by joint managers Danny Carpenter and Paul Gresham is beginning to reap reward with confidence growing.
With Wellington Town getting the day off, Exeter Civil Service regained the leadership after their 4-2 win against the bottom club Sidmouth Town, but three players were red-carded, two of them from the Foxhayes team. Civil were three goals ahead at the break, Franklin Ndoli, Mark Saunders and Adam Jason-Ryall scoring, but Sidmouth having started well got back to 3-1 from Tony West. The vikings then squandered another chance before Civil netted their fourth from Saunders. Civil then had Ndoli sent off and a while later Dave Wilkes too along with a Sidmouth player as the game became a bit untidy. Anthony Griffiths scored the vikings second goal, and manager Paul Ashford felt his team played well enough but need to defend better.
Cullompton Rangers shocked Heavitree Harriers 3-1 and beaten manager Jody Bolt was amazed at how well the Speeds Meadow team played. Harriers did miss an early penalty, Matt Dawson the culprit although he later scored their only goal, but the limelight shone on Rangers whose James Bedford, Jamie Cottrell and Dan Riggs found the net. New Cully assistant manager Simon Privett took the credit for the victory according to boss Greg Radmore who claims that their days of being whipping boys could be over. Tom Pilling and Ben Willey were Raddys pick of the side.
Clyst Valley did a professional job at Heavitree Social Utd where they won 3-0. Steve Millington scored the Valley's only first half goal but they stretched away with a double strike from James Ibbeson. Heavitree felt they had plenty of the game according to manager Tom Bulley but did not take the chances that came their way.
Pinhoe manager John Moore knew it was going to happen sometime, and their 3-1 win at the University may now be their turning point. The pins really clicked according to Moore after giving away an early goal. Vince Conabeare then equalised and two superb goals from Darren Eshun ended Pinhoe's run of four defeats, and all three goals were the work of Kenny Smith. Pins keeper Craig Russell was called on to make two remarkable saves although he was beaten earlier by college skipper George Cowell.
Thorverton were held 2-2 at Feniton and needed a terrific strike from Adam Langabeer to rescue a point. Overall it was a superb contest with Lee Riggs putting the thors in front, but two Dave Court penalties had Feniton heading towards a surprise victory. It was then Langabeer let fly, and after that the game could have gone either way as both teams hunted down a decider.
Bickleigh won 2-1 at Beer Albion to continue their excellent current form. Jordan Copp, back after injury and an own goal after fine work by Tommy Taylor established a 2-0 lead for the mid Devon side. John Cooper got one back for Beer who had to make a 20th minute substitution when one of their players walked off the pitch, although the substitute Phil Arbourne came on and had an excellent game.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 17

Bickleigh manager Nigel Raybould tried to play down his team's stunning 5-2 victory against Premier division leaders Exeter Civil Service 5-2, but inwardly he was beaming about the performance. For 75 minutes Bickleigh had given Civil the runaround and were leading 5-0 before they took their foot off the gas and gave the Foxhayes team the chance to make something of a recovery. Luke Passmore with two goals, Jake Pancherz, Kieran Rapo and Ryan Saunders were the Bickleigh marksmen as they tore the heart out of the Civil team and beaten manager John Gribble said his team could have no complaints. Late goals for Civil came from Frank Ndoli and Mark Saunders.

Wellington Town are now three points clear at the top following their 3-0 win against Heavitree Social Utd. Wellington manager John Norman who scored twice reckoned they actually played better than when they won 8-0 at Heavitree a few months ago, but he was delighted about the quality of the performance. Craig Aspin had the other goal with a real rocket shot but for Heavitree they were limited to very few chances and Norman feels they got off lightly. Heavitree boss Tom Bulley was still upbeat and said his team showed plenty of character against a good side. Heavies keeper Stuart Gordon was outstanding.

St Martins were 2-0 winners at third place Thorverton but for manager Mike Nosworthy it was the quality of their football which was the real winner. Nozzer felt that Thorverton were lucky to escape so generously, and there was no argument about that from Thors manager Ian Harris who reckoned his team were outplayed. Darren Bingham and Matt Anderson were the the Saints scorers.

Clyst Valley won a terrific match against Heavitree Harriers 3-2 after coming from 2-1 down, but Valley rated it a superb game and manager Jeff Weeks was very impressed with the way the Exmouth went about their intentions. At the same time the Valley were up for the match and goals from Mike Lashbrook, Ashley Mcdermid and Dave Rajakovich earned the victory. Rajakovich was later sent off along with Harriers scorer Steve Coulam. Substitute Adam Turner was the other Harriers scorer with a blistering 35 yarder.

Topsham Town won a fiery game at Sidmouth Town 4-2, leaving vikings new boss Paul Ashford still waiting for his first success. The Tops had the better of the first half to lead 2-0 but Sidmouth had chances to get back on terms after the break without getting a good deal of luck, including having a goal disallowed. Neil Cain, Stuart Luxton, Ian Curran and Stuart Tyrer shared the Topsham goals. Andrew Thompson and Jamie Harvey scored for Sidmouth and both teams had a men sent off in an untidy end to the game.

Beer Albion manager Matt Rooke was left flabbergasted after his team managed to score twice in the last five minutes to grab a 3-3 draw against Cullompton Rangers. The visitors at Furzebrake played the entire match with ten men and almost pulled off the score of the day until Beer trailing 3-1 saved face with a double hit including a last gasp penalty. Ashley Barker, Tom Pilling and Ian Allen were the scorers for the battling Rangers with Simon Smith 2 and a Martyn Hancock penalty replying for the fishermen.

Exeter University were 2-0 winners at Hatherleigh Town with a goal in the first and last five minutes from Dave "Swiss" Wiltshire. College skipper George Cowell rated it a good match and the pleasing facor was that his side are not conceding.

A double from Mark Kingdon earned Feniton a 2-1 win at Pinhoe after they had been a goal down. Vince Conabeare had gievn Pinhoe the lead but they were caught out by two set pieces and Feniton deserved their victory by the close. It was a fourth successive defeat for the pins and manager John Moore says his team have to show a bit more character to end their current plight.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 10

Victories were hard to come by in the Premier division at the weekend but the most significant was at Heavitree Social Utd where they edged a gripping city derby against Pinhoe 3-2. Heavitree joint manager Jock Carstairs resigned during the week leaving Tom Bulley in sole charge, and Bulley was delighted that his team responded with an excellent performance to upstage the pins. Bulley made a number of changes although he was limited by the players he had available, but they came up trumps all five goals in the game coming in the first half. Martin Pesko, Paul Furzer and Wayne Knight shared the Heavitree goals. Pinhoe boss John Moore blamed missed chances in the second half when his side were well on top. Moore dismissed the first half despite goals coming from Vince Conabeare and Scott Telford, and two goals they had disallowed, but is certain his team will soon produce the goods.

The only other maximum was from Clyst Valley at Cullompton Rangers where they triumphed 5-2. Valley boss Jeff Weeks said his team were always in control despite letting the Rangers come back from four down to 4-2 in the second half. Matt Thompson, Ashley Mcdermid, James Ibbeson, Javier Martin and Paul Jarman were the Clyst goalscorers. Rangers Ian Allen and an own goal responded for the home side.

Beer Albion had Exeter Civil Service in big trouble at Foxhayes, the East Devon side enjoying a two goal lead with an hour gone. Civil then recovered to 2-2 with Dave Wilkes and Chris Clark scoring, but Wilkes spurned the chance to win it from the penalty spot in the last few minutes when Beer keeper Micheal Westlake made a stunning save. Martin Adkin with a good header and Martin Hancock earlier scored for Beer who also felt tbey had a good penalty shout denied. Beer also pointed out that the Civil keeper was their man of the match which indicated how well they had played.

Heavitree Harriers and Thorverton drew 1-1 in a very close contest, the Harriers coming back after giving away an early goal. Ben Bristowe was the Thorverton scorer, before Aaron Skinner netted for the Exmouth team. Harriers manager Jody Bolt said both teams had chances although not too many in the second half, so overall it was probably a fair result. That was also the view of thors boss Ian Harris who with five regulars missing was content with a point.

Topsham Town and Bickleigh drew 3-3, the tops having led three times before conceding the third goal from a penalty. Tops Mike Webb reckoned it was a big improvement on last weeks performance although they could not secure the victory, but Bickleigh played their part in an entertaining game. Kevin Webb, Gavin Ward and Ian Curran were the Topsham scorers. Tommy Taylor with a double and Stuart Anderson with the late penalty earned Bickleigh their point and manager Nigel Raybould felt the game was a good experience.

The University drew 1-1 with St Martins in a really open game having led at the break with a Joe Woodward goal. Darren Bingham equalised in the second half for St Martins, but blades fan George Cowell in charge of the college side missed a late opportunity to snatch the win.

Wellington Town's match against Sidmouth will be played at a later date. The Somerset team had to give way for their Western League side who were given a rearranged game.

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 3

Heavitree Social Utd joint managers Tom Bulley and Jock Carstairs were fuming after going out 3-1 to Bickleigh, and have pledged to make sweeping changes next week. In fact but for keeper Stuart Gordon, Heavitree could have been really embarrassed, but Bickleigh manager Nigel Raybould was more than content to avenge their recent league defeat at Wingfield Park. Stuart Anderson, Kieran Rapo and Luke Passmore with a screamer earned Bickleigh the win, with Liam McAuley getting Heavitree's only goal from the penalty spot.

Clyst Valley are through to the third round after their 4-1 victory at home to Willand Rovers. The mid Devon side woke Clyst up by taking a fifth minute lead, but the Valley response was just what manager Jeff Weeks expected. Two goal Nathan White, substitute Ollie Bird and Matt Thompson found the target as Willand faded away.

Pinhoe beat Newtown 2-1 but manager John Moore was not pleased by the performance and described it as awful, and he will be making changes next week. Steve Blatchford who was joint man of the match for Pinhoe and Scott Telford built a two goal lead, but Newtown who played some very attractive football reduced the deficit with a Steve Kerswell goal and came close to saving the day. Wes Johnston was the other Pinhoe player to shine.

Beer Albion won 2-1 at Topsham Town in a tie that the beaten hosts described as a poor game. Topsham led through Ian Curran who has not played for some time, but the fishermen scored twice from the fewer chances they created, and that was enough to get them through to round 2.

Two goals from Jonathan French earned Feniton a 2-1 win against East Budleigh after the first division team had taken a third minte lead. Dave Cockayne was the Budleigh scorer, but Feniton managed to turn things around and but for goalkeeper Nathan Hadley who had a blinder the margin could have been greater. Budleigh manager John Pannell was unhappy with Fenitons equaliser which he claims should have been a foul, but overall Feniton deserved to progress.

Thorverton made harder work than expected to beat Exeter St Thomas 3-1, but much of that was down to St Thomas goalkeeper Dave Penberthy who was in fantastic form. Adrian Andrews and Lee Riggs recently back from Cullompton, had Thorverton two ahead, but their nerves were tested when Steve Brown blasted in a beauty for St Thomas. The final goal from Wayne Radford came in the 90th minute, but Thorverton did not really endure many more alarms.

Hatherleigh Town saw off Cullompton Rangers 4-0 and reckon they could have had several more as their visitors offered little threat. Darren Moore, Ryan Davis, Simon James and Dean Rice were the Hatherleigh scorers.

Sidmouth Town won their derby tie at Otterton 4-1 but only after letting their hosts go one in front. Matt Sanders was the Otters scorer, but the vikings dug in to equalise and their greater Premier experience told in the end. Andrew Thompson scored a hat-trick, and one of his goals was unstoppable. Tony West completed the Sidmouth scoring.

Seaton Town won their tie at Westexe Rovers 3-2 but almost let it slip after being three up at the break. Simon Goryl, Bradley Groves and Mike Wheeler were the Seaton scorers.
