OCTOBER 2007 REPORTS

PREMIER

SATURDAY OCTOBER 27

Premier Division

Bottom of the table Cullompton Rangers shocked leaders Wellington Town 2-1 in a fiery clash at Speeds meadow. The Rangers, operating under caretaker managers for the day John Chambers and club secretary Marcus Scott, produced just their second win of the season against a Wellington side whose manager John Norman claims they had three goals disallowed. That was refuted by the Rangers who felt Wellington paid the price for not scoring when they had other chances, but overall the home side dug deep to produce a huge upset. Cullompton, now seeking yet another manager as Greg Radmore, because of work committments, can no longer do the job, reached half-time at 0-0 and then took a shock lead through Ian Allen. Recent Cully signing Andrian Jozwiac then netted a second goal before Matt Fowler got one back for the Somerset team. Rangers then held out to earn their first win since the opening day in August, and climb off the basement rung. Feelings ran high between the two teams during and after the game, but Wellington remain top of the table as their closest rivals were also coming unstuck.

Sidmouth Town under new manager Paul Ashford drew 0-0 with Exeter Civil Service, a result that will have encouraged the East Devon side as they bid to climb the table. Strangely the vikings have beaten Civil at Manstone Lane in the past two years so the Exeter side were not too unhappy with a point either, but although they had more of the game Civil were kept at arms length by a battling effort from Sidmouth.

Thorverton were beaten 2-1 at Exeter University and paid the price for not taking a host of chances. The unluckiest player was Lee Riggs who had three golden efforts but could not convert, and the college then took the lead through George Cowell. Ben Bristowe equalised for Thorverton as they finally looked to be sorting their game out, but the students then pinched the points with the winner from Charlie Clinton.

Bickleigh snatched a last gasp 4-3 win against Heavitree Social Utd just seconds after their visitors had pulled level. In a really competitive all out scrap the mid Devon team took the points after going behind twice. Luke Passmore and Jordan Copp rescued Bickleigh after Gary Wills and Richard Phillips netted for Heavitree. Kieran Rapo made it 3-2 in Bickleighs favour but three minutes from time they conceded an own goal and Heavitree were level. However Copp then scored his second goal and the winner to delight manager Nigel Raybould. Heavitree boss Tom Bulley said his keeper Stuart Gordon made several outstanding saves, and despite not getting at least a point said his team again played well.

Feniton came good in the second half against Hatherleigh Town to win 5-2 after going 2-1 down just after the restart. The home side suddenly got into gear to maintain their recent good form but the North Devon side did not play that badly and were well organised. Jonathan French did get Feniton away to a good start, but Hatherleigh levelled by the break with an own goal and then threatened an upset when they went in front through Matt Wonnacott. Feniton responded from Jamie Easterbrook, Mark Kingdon restored the home side's lead and then further goals from Alex Frankpitt and Phil Anning completed the win as Hatherleigh self-destructed.

DEVON PREMIER CUP

The Devon & Exeter League's interest in the Devon Premier cup was obliterated as all six teams involved were beaten. The major casualty came at Heavitree Harriers where the East Devon side lost 2-1 in the last few minutes to Appledore of the South West Peninsula League. Heavitree had recovered from going a goal down to a penalty that manager Jody Bolt was not happy about, but Matt Dawson tied the game and extra time was looming. Then the North Devon team broke to score the winner, and there was no time left for Harriers to rescue the day for the second time.

It was a similar story for Pinhoe beaten 2-1 at Brixham Villa. Pinhoe manager John Moore felt his team were denied an early penalty and the game then changed on an equaliser for the Villa from a penalty for handball which Moore regarded as extrremely harsh. Vince Conabeare was the Pins scorer, but after levelling from the spot Brixham grabbed a late winner.

St Martins manager Mike Nosworthy was fuming after his team were knocked out 4-3 by Galmpton of the SWPL. Saints had hit back from 3-1 down to level at 3-3 and then in the closing minutes their ten man side conceded the winner. Darren Bingham, Steve Bassett and Matt Anderson were the St Martins scorers, but they had Dave Melmoth sent off and their task was always harder after that. Nozzer said his team did not defend well enough to win the tie.

Clyst Valley were beaten 3-0 at home by Upton Athletic and admit they took second place to a very good team. Clyst stayed in the game until half-time turning round just one down, but once the South Devon side notched a second goal the Valley were on the way out. A third goal underlined Upton's dominance and there were no complaints from valley manager Jeff Weeks.

Two goals in the last ten minutes sank Topsham Town at home to Friary Vaults Mount Gould of the Plymouth League. The Tops had fought back to level the game with manager Danny Carpenter scoring, but then foundered 3-1 as a very good visitors stepped up another gear. Despite losing Topsham regarded their display as one of their best this season, and at times had the Plymouth club fully stretched in defence.

Beer Albion were hoping for a giant-killing against Crediton Utd who are bottom of the SWPL without a league victory, but it was not to be. The fishermen dipped out 3-2 and never recovered from conceding two early goals. One of those was an own goal by Richard Challis, and although the defender scored Beer's second goal late in the match to it was too late to turn things around. Matt Rowson scored Beer's first goal making the score 2-1, but they also missed a penalty, Ian Beavis had his spotkick well saved. Crediton then went 3-1 ahead and managed to see off Beer's late challenge.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 20

Pinhoe had their 100% record blown away 3-0 at Clyst Valley, but losing manager John Moore is convinced this result will give his team the incentive to step up their season. The pins second half recovery after Clyst had taken a big grip on the game encouraged Moore, and he was left far from down by the result. Despite losing their goalkeeper in the warm up, Jeff Saunders taking over as caretaker keeper, the Valley put their game together superbly, and two goals from Javier Martin and substitute Ashley Mcdermid with his first touch had Clyst out of reach. The Valley lost two more players with injury including Matt Thompson, but manager Jeff Weeks was elated with the victory, and could not praise his team enough. The win lifted Clyst level on points with Pinhoe, and both teams are still off the pace, but equally both camps feel they now have a platform to challenge the leaders.

Following back to back defeats in cup and league, Exeter Civil Service stormed back to winning ways with a 6-1 victory at Topsham Town. Civil steadied the ship with first half goals from Dave Wilkes and Steve May, and after Wilkes converted a penalty in the second half Topsham faded away. An own goal, Ryan Pym and finally Wilkes with his hat-trick, completed the Civil tally, and secretary Clive Martin quipped "I go away for two weeks holiday and we lose, good job I am back!"  Topsham's reply from Kevin McGuinness came when they were 5-1 down, and their secretary Mike Webb, although deflated, said the better side won on the day.

A full strength Thorverton won 5-1 at Cullompton Rangers but needed a half-time gee up from manager Ian Harris to get them going. Cully got to half-time at 1-1 after wiping off a Ben Bristowe goal, but the thors took charge in the second half as Bristowe netted a second, Emlyn Harris scored twice, one of the goals a scorching top corner free kick, and then Will Pennington completed their haul. Rangers manager Greg Radmore signed four Polish players during the week, and all four made their debut, and Drzelijfrl Wojceaj, was the Rangers scorer.

St Martins 5-1 win at Heavitree Social Utd was almost a repeat of their cup victory there a few weeks ago. Saints again under sole managership of Mike Nosworthy after Mickey Turner stepped down, only had ten players available an hour before kick off so they had to raid their second team, but they were still far too strong for the Wingfield Park Side. Steve Bassett, one of the late call ups scored twice, and singles came from Darren Bingham, just his second league goal of the season, and Matt Anderson and Ross Casey with their first, earned St Martins the points. Shawn King replied for Heavitree, but joint manager Tom Bulley reckoned the final scoreline was very flattering, and thought his team played well enough to have been much closer.

League leaders Wellington Town kept their grip on the top with a 4-0 win against Beer Albion. Wellies manager John Norman led by example with a hat-trick but the delight for the club was a first goal for Under 17 defender Luke Bryant. Beer were not outplayed, they contributed to a very good match in the first half which ended 0-0, but Wellington had all the answers as they opened a two point cushion.

For 70 minutes visiting Hatherleigh Town held out at Heavitree Harriers, but the Exmouth team finally made the breakthrough to clutch a 2-0 success. Harriers boss Jody Bolt said he had never really seen a team so set on a point, so he was very relieved when Liam McMahon broke the North Devon resistance and Steve Coulam added a second. Bolt added that Hatherleigh had some good players and were well organised, and their game plan almost paid off.

Feniton still basking in their midweek cup win at Devon League Budleigh Salterton, carried it over to beat Sidmouth Town 4-1. Both teams knew the importance of the result, but it was Feniton's day and they coloured their performance with some stunning goals. Defender Jamie Easterbrook curled in a first half beauty, his first of the season, and Feniton took a firm grip after the vikings initial second half storm died down. Richard Austin, Jonathan French and Alex Frankpitt with his first goal sealed the win. Dejected vikings manager Simon Hudson left the field with injury and was very disappointed with the defeat, despite a last minute response from Mike Stamp.

Bickleigh went down 3-2 at the University despite coming from behind twice. Bickleigh manager Nigel Raybould said his team should have at least earned a draw, but in the second half they stopped doing the things they have been learning in the top flight and paid the price. Kieran Rapo and Martin Lane scored for Bickleigh. The University scorers were Sam Huges, Tom Whipp and Pete Ralph, the college's second win this season and lifts them halfway up the Premier table.

SATURDAY OCTOBER 13

EAST DEVON SENIOR CUP

Wellington Town the reigning East Devon Senior cup holders were sensationally blasted out of the first round by Premier division rivals Heavitree Harriers. The Exmouth team were 7-2 winners and even manager Jody Bolt was rubbing his eyes in disbelief. Matt Dawson with a hat-trick. Ryan Devlin, Jac Civill, Steve Blurton and an own goal completed the Harriers victory, and they never let go of the tie after going 5-1 ahead in the first half. Wellington manager John Norman and James Baker replied, but on the day their game was miles away from the performances which have taken them to the top of the league table. Harriers boss Bolt felt that Wellington must have been missing several regulars, he was surprised at how comfortable the victory was.

There was another big shock at Exeter Civil Service where first division Budleigh Salterton triumphed 1-0 in a second round tie. A first half Dave Evans goal separated the two teams, but robins manager Alex Freer reckoned his side could have won by a lot more. Budleigh more than matched their Premier hosts at the passing game, and their young side fully deserved their place in the third round.

Exmouth Amateurs frightened the life out of St Martins before going down 5-3. The struggling first division side led 3-1 at the break, and Saints were staring down the barrel. Two goal Steve Tweedy and Ashram Ghani had Exmouth dreaming of a major scalp, but somehow the Minster Park team clawed their way back and two late goals from Darren Bingham saves the blushes. Greg Hooper with two goals and Kevin Pike were the other St Martins scorers.

Culm Utd last seasons losing finalists are also out beaten 4-3 at Broadclyst Social Club. It was a cracking tie and

SATURDAY OCTOBER 6

Exeter Civil Service lost top spot and had their unbeaten record smashed by new boys Wellington Town who take over as Premier leaders for the second time this season. The Foxhayes club were left stunned by the Somerset team who claim they had two players whicked away by their main side before they travelled. It made little difference for Wellington, and although Civil put their game together well, defensively they had a bad day, and could not match the scoring abilities of their visitors whose manager John Norman, and assistant boss Nick Bower were among the goals. Ashley Gains and a second half penalty from Craig Aspin completed Wellingtons shock result. Chris Clark was the Civil scorer and manager John Gribble was impressed by the new leaders all round game, and Wellington said Civil were the best footballing team they have met.

Something had to give at Pinn Lane but Pinhoe the home side kept their nerve and their 100% record when they defeated a previously Thorverton 2-1. A first minute Shane Maddocks goal helped, and a Vince Conabeare volley five minutes later had Pinhoe in the driving seat and although Thorverton recovered their poise they were unable to get back on terms. Midfielder Steve Blatchford was considered Pinhoe's architect by manager John Moore. Thors boss Ian Harris said his team were nowhere in the first half, but they did a lot better after the break with Adrian Andrews scoring their reply.

Heavitree Social Utd were 2-1 down at Sidmouth Town but turned the game over to win 5-3. For Heavitree managers Tom Bulley and Jock Carstairs it was a team victory built around their new midfield which eventually proved too much for the vikings. Ryan Sellick with a penalty and Craig Badcock got Sidmouth away to a 2-1 interval lead, but Heavitree levelled with a penalty and their influence on the game grew. Martin Pesko scored twice for Heavitree whose other goals came from Paul Furzer, Mark Carstairs and Liam McAuley. Jean Paul Staniforth scored Sidmouths other goal.

St Martins joint manager Mike Nosworthy claims they made hard work of beating Heavitree Harriers 3-2 and that they ought to have nailed it by the break when they led 2-1. At the same time they rated Heavitree as a good side, who will cause a few problems, but the Minster Park team had just too much in the bank for their visitors. Two goal Ross Parker and Lee Parker scored for the Saints while the Harriers kept in touch through Matt Dawson and an own goal. Harriers manager Jody Bolt was disappointed but says his team are still learning.

Topsham Town with just one win on board before saturday won a remarkable game at Cullompton Rangers 8-3. Goals rained in at regular intervals and leading the way for the tops was Kevin Webb with a hat-trick. Joint manager Danny Carpenter scored twice, with Julian Dunstan, Stuart Luxton and 17 year old Stuart Tyrer adding singles. Mark Pierce who again had an excellent match, Ian Allen and Lee Maunder scored for Rangers, but manager Greg Radmore said he was embarrassed by the end result and feels he has to strengthen the side urgently if they are to make any progress.

Bickleigh enjoyed only their second win since being promoted beating Feniton 3-1 and for manager Nigel Raybould it could not have come at a better time. The mid Devon side needed to keep clear of the danger zone and they did the job well in a good contest against the East Devon visitors. Kieran Rapo, Jordan Copp and Jake Pancherz were the Bickleigh scorers. Feniton manager Dave Carnall said his team played well but they lack finish, their only goal coming from Dave Court to earn a 1-1 interval lead. Feniton also had a player sent off.

Beer Albion were within ten minutes of victory against Exeter University but the college who deserved something from the game recovered to draw 2-2. It was the University who scored first, but goals from John Cooper and Matt Rowson took Beer into the lead. Liam Narey then netted his second goal for the students who also had a player sent off in the closing minutes.

There was a huge blow for Clyst Valley beaten 1-0 at Hatherleigh Town. The only goal came from a Valley defender under pressure, but generally Clyst could not turn their territorial possession into goals. For Hatherleigh it is points on the board at last, and spokesman Stuart Dymond feels they may well turn the corner now.
